Sleepy brains prone to freqeunt shutdowns May 21, 2008
Posted by Sleep Enough in : Sleep news , trackbackThis is an interesting article concerning the adverse effects of not getting enough sleep. It’s always been clear to sleep researchers that the brain is practically forced to take periodic bouts of mini naps if it doesn’t get enough sleep. That’s why we find ourselves nodding off if miss our regular sleep times. After reading the article, it became even more clear to me, why if you don’t get enough sleep, it can result in disastrous results.
The article suggests that the brain will lapse in and out of a sleep and non-sleep state pretty rapidly, and these momentary lapses of concentration and alertness cannot be helped much, except to go - get some sleep.
The message is clear, the brain is hardwired to get its fill of sleep everyday, regardless of who we are, or what we do. And the brain doesn’t care less whether we live in a modern age and have too little time on our hands to partake of sleep, or whether we’re living in a stone age period, and have too much time to throw away in round the clock siestas. Mind you, the brain is blissfully unaware of any “definition” for sleep and is merely carrying out its functions.
It seems that any attempt to circumvent these inbuilt mechanisms, will only result in the brain “taking stronger measures” to obtain sleep, even if it means giving us “power failures.” Opponents of sleep will again be reminded of the unavoidable nature of sleep, while sleep purists will have their convictions of the indispensable nature of sleep - reaffirmed once more.
