Curious case of a boy who could not sleep
Have you come across this story of a 3 year old boy, Rhett Lamb, who couldn’t sleep? I used to have sleep problems that as I recall, felt something like that too. Yes, your body feels tired, but for some weird reason you can’t sleep. And this can drag on for many days on end. Even when you feel dead tired, the most you sleep is a few hours, and you find yourself awake just a few hours later! But I’ve gotten much better since, although for these sufferers, it’s the REAL thing though.
The syndrome is a rare brain disorder called chiari malformation, in which a portion of the brain extends out from the skull and impedes on the spinal chord, with the result that the brain can’t perform its sleep functions normally. What doctors did for Rhett was perform surgery to create more space for his brain and spinal chord.
I would assume that this Vietnamese guy probably also has a severe case of chiari malformation? Reportedly, he couldn’t sleep for decades. How awful is that?
